Blizzard 2011

Well, we survived the blizzard.  Came out with just over a foot of snow, and a not-so-impressed dog.  Rosey does not approve of all the snow, since it just gets stuck in her paws and freezes the paw pads.

Luckily, the little plows came and plowed the sidewalk, so she did not have to traipse through all the snow, and could admire from the sidewalk.

Happy Gotcha Day, Renegade!

Well, this is it.  We made it a year.  This year has been filled with fun times and bad times, laughs and cries, smiles and frowns.  You have taught me so much this year, probably the most important of the lessons to take everything day by day.  You may have frustrated me at times, but you were always good for a laugh.  You really showed me what a good boy you are, and I am so glad I got to see you grow up in the time you were here.

We had so many times together over the past year, but here is the most vivid one.  I was sitting in the living room, and here you up to something.  I get up, go to find you, and instead, I find a white, floury monster.  Yep, you had gotten into the newly opened bag of flour, and were having a blast in it.  I promise, we forgive ya ;-)

I love ya bud, and whatever I say, you are NOT the world's worst ferret.  Happy Gotcha Day Rennie, here's to many more!

Christmas Tree Ferrets

Well, today was finally the day to take down the Christmas tree.  Of course, I had the ferrets out running around, and they never make anything easy.  This is how it ended:

Happy Gotcha Day, Rosey!

Well, today marks 13 years since Rosey has come into my life.  She came to live with us when I was 7, and terrified of dogs.  I never really wanted her to begin with, but she has shown me how great dogs really are, are how much love they have to give.

Rosey has been with me through a lot.  She has been with me through the good times -- finishing school, going on to college, through birthdays and Christmases, and all the things inbetween.  Whenever I was bored, I always had a friend right beside me, and for that I was ever grateful.  Not only was she there through the good times, but she was there through the bad -- being bullied at school, to almost being killed by the bullying, to that loss of the first boyfriend, fights with the parents, loss of 3 grandfathers and 2 grandmothers, when ever I needed a shoulder to cry on, she was right beside me.  I could tell her all my secrets, without fear of it getting out.

One memory with her that will always stick with me, is her first New Years with us.  I was 8 years old, and it was my first year planning on staying up all night long.  My grandmother was in town visiting, so it was my mother, grandmother, sister and myself who were staying up.  I leave the living room for a minute, telling them I am just going to go get some juice.  An hour later, they realize I had not been back yet, and go to look for me.  There I was, in the door way of the kitchen, sleeping, using Rosey as a pillow.

Well, I guess I will wrap this up, with some photos of my sweet girl.  Happy Gotcha Day Rosey, here is to many more to come.

Meet the Crew

I am sure you are all wondering who/what this blog will be all about!  So, lets get onto it.  This blog is being made to write about my awesome, albeit testing at times, pets.  There are currently 3 ferrets, and one dog here keeping me on my toes.

We shall start off with the dog.  Rosey is a 13 year old German Shepherd Border Collie mix, that we found 13 years ago today.  She was found on the busy highway, and was brought into our house and we never regretted the decision.  She came to us as a 5lb 3 month old puppy, and was not supposed to get much bigger.  12lbs at the most was the guess.  She just kept growing, and growing, and is now my 48lb dog.  She has been with me through the good times and the bad, and we would not change it for the world.

We had Rosey for 8 1/2 years before adding any other substantial pet into the house.  I mean, we had hamsters, and we had a rabbit and 2 birds that were here before Rosey, but other than that, not really any other pets.  After begging my parents for about 8 years consistently, I was finally allowed to have my ferret.

Rascal was looking for a home, from somebody who worked with my mom and sister.  When my sister told me about him, I knew I had to talk my parents into it, and low and behold it worked.  Rascal was 2 years old when he came to me, and is now 6 years old.  The past 4 years with him have been fantastic, testing, and very educational.  I would not change a thing.  For those who do not know, ferrets average life span is 7-9 years, and they will generally get a common form of cancer before then.  Rascal has Insulinoma, which is cancer of the pancreas.  Basically, it affects him as though it is the opposite of diabetes.  He lives on daily meds, but you would never be able to tell he was sick just by looking at him.  He is a spunky fella, who just loves to run!

Next, I got Renegade.  What to say about Renegade.  Ren was looking for a home after his owner was no longer interested in him and his cagemate, and wanted to find them a good home.  I was looking for a single ferret, but had already met these guys and loved them, so I talked my parents into letting me to TWO more.  Renegade came to me in 2010, when he was a few months short of 3 years old.  He is now 3 years old, and to say he has changed my life would be an understatement.  He is one of the naughtiest ferrets I have ever met, and he definitely tests my patience.  He is a bigger boy, at nearly 3lbs, but he is ALL muscle, there is not fat on him.  He is also a bully, to any other ferrets in his house that he is not used to.  He is fine elsewhere, but his house, other than my other 2, no ferrets are allowed.  He also tortures poor Rosey constantly.  He is now 3 years old, and a perfectly healthy boy who is just love.

Here, I will take a moment to talk about Renegade's cagemate.  Renegade came with a DEW (dark-eyed white) male, who was a couple months short of his 5th birthday when I got him.  I named him Rogue.  Unfortunately, Rogue came to me with a plethora of health issues, and even though he wanted to live, and I fought for him, he was humanely euthanized a couple months after his 5th birthday.  The decision to help him on his final journey was the hardest decision I have ever had to make, but it was time.  By the time I made the decision, he was on an inhaler for some breathing issues, meds every 2 hours, and handfed some baby food.  He also could not make it to the litterbox, and was just not happy anymore.  I had him scheduled to be euthanized on June 1, 2010, but when I came downstairs on May 27th, 2010, he let me know it was time, so I took him in that day.  RIP Rogue, I miss you every day.

Finally, we have little miss Harley.  Harley came to me from the Ferret Rescue Society of Ottawa, a wonderful rescue that I am on the board for (www.ferretrescue.ca), a few days after Rogue left me.  I knew I needed another playmate for Renegade, as Rascal was alot worse off than he is now, and the rescue offered me a ferret of my choice, so I talked to my parents about it, and off I went to choose.  Now, I had met Harley back in May-ish, but she was up for adoption with her cagemate, Bandita.  Unfortunately, around the same time Rogue was euthanized, Bandita lost her long-fought battle with cancer and was also humanely euthanized.  Rogue lost to cancer, Bandita lost to cancer, I saw it as a sign.  Harley needed a cagemate, somebody who would be accepting, and I attached right to her.  She has the sweetest personality, just loves to be with me, will follow me around the house, and loves to give kisses.  She recently celebrated her 3rd birthday, and is a small girl with a big bum.  We are working on that ;) (ok, so not really.  When you are this cute, you get whatever you want).

Well, that is all for now!
